Backoffice tool

Definition, conceptualization and UI development

Client background

The project is protected by a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), so the client is hidden and every screenshot is just a recreation.

The Challenge

Shoppers want to find things fast, so creating a great discovery experience is key to conversion.
Faceted search adds product filters to expose your valuable information in an easy-to-shop format. From options to sizes, colors and brands, product filters put each attribute front and center. The results dynamically adjust based on selection, allowing your shoppers to sort, filter and shop based on what’s important to them.

The company needed to update its backoffice tool in order to manage in a more efficient and flexible way the logic of the faceted search filters on their sites. They also needed to improve the intelligence of the search results with additional tools like synonyms, redirections and presets (compilation of products for temporal campaigns).

The Approach

Our high level goals were to:

  • Manage easily different sites with a huge amount of products and categories.
  • Edit facets depending on products taxonomy and their associated attributes
  • Customize facets individually being aware the inheritance implications
  • Edit sorting search results globally and by category, aligned with user expectations.
  • Manage synonyms, redirections and presets with a focus on simplicity.
  • Make a fast lightweight native web app even with all backend implications of large databases. It should load quickly and help people perform a variety of key actions quickly.

The Process

DISCOVERY PHASE
Working closely with the product, sales and development team, the discovery phase was aimed at gaining a deep understanding of the current system, to uncover user needs and business requirements and to agree on a common vision and scope for the project.

DESIGN PHASE
During the design phase I stablished the new structure and interaction design for the application. I worked closely with the client to verify early design concepts as well as more refined designs (interactive prototypes).

IMPLEMENTATION PHASE
During the build phase, I made sure designs were implemented correctly and resolved design problems that came out during development.

The Outcome

I led the whole design process from discovery and scoping through design and development through to QA and launch.
We made substantial improvements over their previous tool, focusing on usability and simplicity, taking in mind always the special needs of the users (commercial department) that asked for a versatile and flexible tool.
